PADIHAM's interest in this season's North West Counties Football League Challenge Cup competition ended when they were beaten 1-0 at home by First Division side Silsden.

A goal by former Padiham striker James Gill on 20 minutes proved to be the deciding factor in this Roses clash leaving the Yorkshire side to progress into the second round.

Silsden had the better chances in the opening 10 minutes with Michael Rosser going close with a free kick, Tom Applebee missing out on a one-on-one with Padiham keeper Rob Batty and defender Damian Ingham clearing another effort off his own goal line.

The Storks, however, had their chances and Stuart Booth was unlucky not to open the scoring when his shot was deflected just wide. Gareth Seddon also went close with a header from a Paul Fildes free kick.

On 20 minutes the first, and what proved to be the only goal, arrived when Gill exploited a mistake by Barnham to give Silsden the lead. Fildes and Seddon missed chances to put the Storks level before half time and Longley and Dowgill had opportunities to add to Silsden's lead before the break.

In the second half, Batty saved well from Gill and the Silsden keeper Martin Foulger had to be at his best to keep out a Fildes free kick. Matt Anderton had two good chances before the final whistle, but both were missed.
