A LOUD Huzzah to Citizen Smith for his comment last week regarding the way the majority of cyclists ride these days.

They seem to think they have a divine right to aggressively ride wherever and however they want. And, sadly, it is not only 'tearaway' youths who are guilty but mature adults and family groups who really ought to know better.

In addition to the examples Citizen Smith mentioned, there is increasing use of Morecambe promenade as a cycle path despite a council by-law which, with certain exceptions, bans the use of cycles and mechanically propelled vehicles.

The majority have no excuse for their actions but just ignore the law to ride on the promenade, pavements and pedestrian ways with impunity - their actions being equally ignored by street wardens and police.

This uncontrolled action is leading to further growing abuse of the promenade by motor cyclists, quad bikes, mini motor cycles and the like (probably untaxed, uninsured and without driving licences) at the Heysham end of the prom.

Before long, some poor pedestrian, probably a toddler, will be injured. Phone calls of complaint to the police have failed to elicit a response.

Is there a hidden agenda in that the council and police do nothing about this issue? Law breaking is law breaking and must be stopped.

Cyclists must return to where they belong - that is on the publicly-funded cycle paths and roads. Citizen Smith is right to say action must be taken and sanity restored. I live in hope...

To the (few) cyclists who ride responsibly, thank you. But the others let you down.

Alan Dean, Heysham.
