A GRADE II-listed hotel which has become an "eyesore" is set to be turned into 14 apartments.

The re-development of the Groves Hotel, one of Nelson's most historic buildings, will make the town more attractive to visitors, according to councillors.

A meeting of the planning committee heard that the plan would boost Nelson as the hotel's Manchester Road location was seen as a "gateway" into town.

However the scheme, submitted by Wilterton Ltd, will only go ahead if planners approve the company's business plan to ensure the project is viable.

Planning officers had recommended refusal but councillors approved the plan during a Nelson committee meeting

The development will also see 38 new apartments built next to the hotel.

Lyndon Monks, representing Wilterton Ltd, said: "The building has been subjected to arson attacks and vandalism.

"This will bring it back to its former glory. It's a sympathetic development."

Coun Mahboob Ahmed said: "The Groves Hotel is a problem and an eyesore and it is the first impression you get of Nelson. This is a gateway to Nelson and this is a really impressive project for the Groves Hotel."

Co-opted committee member Susan Nike added: "This building has been derelict long enough in an area we are trying to renovate. It would be great if it could be brought back to life and this is an ideal thing to do here.

I spent a lot of years in that place when I was younger and it was a really lovely hotel. It is part of Nelson's history."

Pendle Council's housing market renewal department had backed the plans.

The Grade II listed building, also known as Spring Cottage, was built by the Townson family in the 19th Century .
