AN "INHUMAN" thief has been blasted for using the devastating earthquake in Pakistan to con people out of cash.

Officers are probing two reports in Nelson that a bogus caller is knocking on doors claiming to be collecting for the earthquake appeal, but then sneaking into homes to steal purses and cash.

Police in Barnoldswick are also investigating reports of a similar offence although on that occasion the thief left empty handed.

The man is described as Asian in his twenties. He is believed to be around

6ft tall. The victims have both been elderly.

Jamil Munir, of the Pakistan Welfare Association, said: "I am absolutely gobsmacked that somebody could do this, it is inhuman. For somebody to take advantage of this tragedy is very disappointing when communities are already suffering stress.

"I would urge anybody who wants to give money towards the disaster appeal to do so through a recognised charity or at any of the mosques in the area and not to people calling at their homes, unless they know the person."

Inspector Jon Bullas from Nelson Police said: "What has happened in Pakistan is terrible and there is an urgent need for money and supplies to support the victims of this tragic event.

"However, I would urge local residents who want to help the Earthquake Appeal to give to a registered local or national charity if they want to help and to be very weary of anyone who knocks on their door un-announced.

"We are pretty sure that this man is not collecting for the Earthquake Appeal at all but is pocketing the ill gotten gains himself. I'm sure all sectors of the local community will be horrified by this and back our appeal for anyone with information about these offences to come forward."

Coun Mohammed Iqbal from Pendle council echoed Inspector Bullas. He said: "It is clearly wrong to take advantage of such a terrible situation. If you know who this offender is, then please search your conscience and come forward to the Police."

He added: "If you wish to assist the Earthquake Appeal, the best way to do so is to give to a registered charity, perhaps Muslim Global Relief which has a branch in nelson or the Disasters Emergency Committee."

Anyone with information should call police on 01282 425001 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
