MORE than 1,000 willing volunteers have taken part in cleaning up beaches around Morecambe Bay so far this year.

Hordes of people like the group pictured above have been backing the 'Beachcare' project organised by the Morecambe Bay Partnership.

And they have removed more than 10,000kg of rubbish from places as far apart as Walney Island at Barrow in Furness and Fleetwood.

But there is much more to come, says the partnership.

October has been designated as 'Citizenship Month' locally and a special series of litter sweeps is planned.

It is hoped that even more people with an opportunity to get involved and experience the benefits of improving the local coastal environment.

Beach cleans will be taking place on Wednesday, October 12, at Heversham Marshes from 10am to noon; Saturday, October 22, at Morecambe Lodge from 10am to noon; and Saturday, October 29, all day at the Golden Ball public house, Snatchems.

All are welcome to go along. More information and directions are from Anna on 01539-773449.
