I READ, with interest, the article "Demolition is nothing to do with race" (Letters, Monday, September 26) by Mubeen Mulla and noted this letter was a reply to an anonymous letter writer which, admittedly, I haven't seen.

I wholeheartedly agree with Mubeen Mulla that there has been demolition in "Asian" areas (the writer's words, not mine), but this leads to the question: Have the resources from the Elevate Housing Market Renewal Programme been distributed around the borough in a fair and equitable way?

If you take a journey through the borough you will find, for the most part, Whalley Range, Blackburn, has been the recipient of a lot of resources, whether it be for refurbishment, or new build of properties and businesses, and the same goes for Audley and Queen's Park.

More recently, the areas of Johnston Street and Devonport Road have been the recipients of funds and while I don't disagree that these areas are in need of funds, I have to ask why these areas are now called 'Bank Top,' when any native of Blackburn will tell you that these are Wensley Fold and Preston New Road areas.

Bank Top, in my day, was a thriving community with St Luke's Church at the centre of it bordering Wensley Fold and Griffin areas and encompassing the vast swathe of terrace homes that were bulldozed to make way for Galligreaves Estate.

It was strange, some years ago, to find ourselves a part of the Mill Hill community and to be told that when we read about Bank Top getting more resources, it wasn't our area, but somewhere else.

Yes, Mill Hill received some block grant renovation, but 'funds' ran out before the project reached its conclusion, and has never been resurrected.

The rise of the BNP in the Burnley area was due, in part, to people's observations that funds were being spent in some areas whilst other areas were going without and this was food and drink to the BNP, who shamelessly exploited these views to maximum effect.

I am the owner of a small business in the Griffin/Bank Top area, and along with other small business owners and concerned residents, am trying to get Councillor M Khan and the Elevate team to look again at proposals for the Griffin area, and what we think are badly thought out plans for the area as a whole.

We must be the only residents who are actively encouraging the council and Elevate team to demolish the whole of our area and not leave businesses and residents vulnerable in a pile of rubble that would be left if they got their way.

I hope that all the borough councillors will work towards a fair and equitable sharing of Elevate resources around the borough and deter those elements such as the BNP who do not have a place in fair and decent society.

TONY JORDAN, Wellington Road, Blackburn.
