IT was repugnant to see on our television screens an 82-year-old man being dragged out of the Labour Conference Hall for shouting "That's a lie," during the Foreign Secretary's speech. The stewards were to say the least very robust in their treatment of him.
They should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. However, what I found even more disturbing was the action of the police who not only failed to prevent Mr Wolfgang from being manhandled but for a period of time held him under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
A frail 82-year-old man with a sincerely held view on the war in Iraq posed no threat to anyone.
In these dangerous times I recognise that the police have a difficult job to do at big events like party conferences but they must be seen to act within the law.
