GARRETH O'Connor has his eyes on eclipsing his scoring target after three deadly strikes in as many games.

O'Connor ensured Burnley go into the two-week break in high spirits with a sensational winner at Wolves to follow up the stunning free kick against Ipswich and a point-saving penalty against Brighton.

That made it five goals in 11 starts for the former Bournemouth midfielder, who scored 14 times for the Dean Court club last season to help earn a summer move to Turf Moor.

And O'Connor now believes he can surpass a revised target after bursting onto the Championship scene.

"I looked at the start of the season at taking my goalscoring form with Bournemouth, and so far I've scored a few goals and I hope I can continue with that," said the Irishman.

"I've got a goals target in mind, but I'll keep it to myself. Last year I set a target and I beat it, but I didn't set it as high this year and if I keep hitting the ball the way I am and they're going in, I could end up with more.

"Even Ade (Akinbiyi) said I'm catching him up, so it's going great!"

O'Connor's goal-den spell has coincided with his return from a three-match ban for a sending of at Reading in late August, when he kicked out at Bobby Convey in frustration in the final seconds of the 2-1 defeat.

He added: "I was so disappointed to get sent-off for something as stupid as that, and to miss three games was very disappointing.

"Luckily enough I got straight back in the team and I've been doing well since then. It took me a few games to settle in although I didn't think I played too well at Wolves, but managed to get the goal.

"I was pretty pleased with my performance against Ipswich, and on the back of my sending-off I think I've been playing well. But it was great to get the win and hopefully we can kick on from that now and get right up the table, starting with Leeds."

Clarets boss Steve Cotterill is also delighted at O'Connor's growing contribution a quarter of the way through the season.

He insisted: "I'm delighted for Garreth because he has come up from a league lower and early on I felt he found it quite tough to adapt.

"But he has arrived a little bit in the Championship stage now and that's five goals now. That's more than some centre forwards have scored!"
