RE-PLANTING on a lake island at a popular park was the first project for members of a new green team.

The Parkwatch team at Blackburn's Corporation Park has been set up to tackle the problem of vandals and to counteract the negative effects of the wreckers by carrying out various environmental projects.

As part of the scheme, residents have been issued with special cards which they can hand to the police after recording any incidents.

Clearing overgrown vegetation on the lake island at Corporation Park was the first step in the battle against vandalism, which is supported by people throughout East Lancashire. Parkwatch co-ordinator Stan Mills said: "The response to the scheme has been amazing.

"Corporation Park has always been held in high regard by local people and we have also had letters of encouragement from Preston, Hyndburn and other areas from people congratulating us for taking a stand against vandals.

"The police, too, have been extremely supportive."
