ANGRY Burnley councillors were calling for an urgent action meeting with local health chiefs to express their opposition to plans for Burnley General Hospital to 'opt out' of the health service.

A Burnley councillor said that the hospital belonged to the people and that any move to take it from the health service was immoral.

**River watchdogs were to prosecute North West Water for alleged pollution of a tributary to the River Ribble.

The National Rivers Authority claimed that the isolated Hellifield Treatment Works had pumped out polluting levels of sewage into the tributary.
