A WOMAN pensioner is "very poorly" in hospital with a fractured skull after a horror road traffic accident on a zebra crossing in Rossendale last night.

Miss Winifred East, 74, of Dale Street, Bacup, was crossing Market Street, Bacup, at 7pm, when the accident occurred.

She was walking across the zebra with a neighbour, Mrs Margaret Oldfield, 72, of Dale Street, when both were involved in a collision with a white Vauxhall Cavalier driven by Len Davies, 49, of Townsend Street, Waterfoot, who was travelling towards Bacup centre.

A police officer driving a car and waiting to turn into Bank Street was on the spot and able to immediately contact the emergency services.

Miss East was taken by ambulance to Rochdale Infirmary and transferred to Hope Hospital, Manchester, for neuro-surgery. She was taken back to Rochdale Infirmary and later transferred to Birch Hill Hospital, Littleborough.

Mrs Oldfield was treated at Rochdale Infirmary for injuries to her head and arms and discharged after treatment.

Market Street was closed to traffic for two hours after the accident while police traffic investigators completed their inquiries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them.
