THERE is more serious flak for the Government with the news that they are planning to cut social security by another £1billion a year .

Yet another leaked letter, this time from social security secretary Peter Lilley to William Waldegrave, Treasury chief secretary, talks of severe cuts in housing benefits for the under-25s and cuts of up to 75 per cent in industrial injuries benefits.

It would appear that the Tories are prepared to sacrifice the poor in order to ensure success at the next General Election.

Even Labour has said it will have to look at certain sectors of the Welfare State.

But Draconian measures such as those suggested in the leaked letter would mean misery for millions.

It would be a case of robbing the poor to give to the rich, or at the very least taking away benefits from those on society's bottom rung to finance tax cuts for the slightly better-off.

The cuts would be marginally less offensive if they were designed to balance the books. Most people would understand that.

But this is a much more cynical move.

It is designed to finance tax cuts which will be used in an attempt to con the voters into giving the Tories another five years in Government.

We have a feeling the electorate will not be fooled.
