ALAN Harper has emerged as a surprise contender for the post of assistant manager at Cardiff City.

The Clarets midfielder linked up with the Third Division side today and will make his debut in tomorrow's clash against Hereford United at Edgar Street.

Burnley agreed to a month's loan after Cardiff manager Kenny Hibbitt had spoken with the Clarets player on Thursday night.

Now, if Harper makes an impression at Ninian Park, it could eventually lead to a permanent move to South Wales in a player-coach capacity.

"Kenny indicated he needs some help on the training ground and he feels someone of Alan's rich experience could be of immense assistance," explained Burnley boss Jimmy Mullen. "I know Kenny has no number two at present and, if Alan does well, it could be a big opportunity for him to stake a claim.

"Kenny wants Alan in a coaching role at Cardiff and this is a great opportunity for him. Alan Harper is an excellent professional and I'm sure he will do well down there."

Harper arrived at Turf Moor in the summer of 1994. However, he has not featured in the first team this season.

Rossendale Clarets stage their Christmas Social at the Rose and Bowl, Stacksteads on Monday (8.00pm). Tickets available on the door at £4.00 each.

Non-season ticket holders have the option of buying a seat from the ticket office for the home game with Carlisle United on December 2. All tickets remaining at 12.00 pm on the day of the game will be transferred to the turnstiles for sale at full adult price until kick-off.
