A HORRIFIC rush hour smash caused motorway mayhem on the M65 today.

The westbound carriageway was completely closed after an accident involving the cab unit of an articulated wagon and a pick-up truck.

Firefighters, police and ambulance crews raced to the scene after reports that at least one person had become trapped in the wreckage.

Police warned motorists to leave the westbound M65 at junction seven to avoid the accident, which happened around 200 metres from the Whitebirk roundabout at the Blackburn end, at around 9am. At one point traffic was backed up to Dunkenhalgh turn-off but the hard shoulder and first lane of the motorway was reopened by 9.45am.

The cab unit, owned by Fagan and Whalley, haulage contractors, of Cobden Street, Hapton, collided with a Volkswagen Caddy pick-up truck carrying paint.

A police spokesman said: "One person, a woman was trapped and the accident appeared quite serious."

The trapped woman was released after about an hour.
