BLACKBURN for the second week running showed their Jekyll and Hyde nature and managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

At the moment Blackburn are using the non-league and cup games to try out promising players. In essence, after leading 17-3, an extremely comfortable victory should have ensued.

But the collective aggression and mental hardness disappeared and Caldy sealed victory with the last movement of the match.

The home side started slowly and after eight minutes Caldy took the lead through a penalty by Jim Diamond.

Then Blackburn enjoyed their best 15 minutes of play and from excellent support play centre Scott Foster dummied his way over.

That was converted by Nick Westhead to make it 7-5 to be followed by a try from a penalty move from prop Andy Ridehalgh, again converted by Westhead to make it 14-3.

Another Westhead penalty made it 17-3 and, in a re-run of last weekend's fixture at West Park, the game plan disappeared along with the ball retention and drift defence.

This allowed the visitors' pacy backs into the game with two excellent tries to make the half time score 17-15 to Blackburn.

Shortly after half time the visitors' pressure brought another score to make it 20-17, with a Nick Westhead penalty making it 20-20.

A drop goal then gave Caldy the lead which at last woke Blackburn up. Concerted pressure and a lovely pass from Andy Graham allowed Martin Donaldson to get in the corner well, converted by Westhead to make it 27-23.

However, right on the final whistle, Caldy won a series of penalties and prop Dave Cotton crashed over at the death to make it 27-28 to Caldy. This Saturday Blackburn have a home game against Aspull, 2.30pm.
