ANGRY Jimmy Mullen today turned his fire on the Clarets defence and told them: "Get back to basics."

Burnley had to rely on a late equaliser from goal king Kurt Nogan to wrestle a 2-2 draw against Second Division form team Chesterfield.

But Mullen was critical of his last line of defence after Burnley let Chesterfield grab the lead after dominating the early stages.

Mullen rapped: "We got caught cold just before half-time with the Chesterfield equaliser and questions have to be asked about our defending.

"That made me very angry because we just shouldn't get caught with goals like that.

"We are a more experienced side than that. We should know better. But unfortunately we seem to be making a habit of it and we need to get back to basics."

"We were too slow in reacting to their attacks and Chesterfield put it in the back of the net twice. Those sort of mistakes have got to stop.

"I was very pleased with the start we made to the game but a lot less happy in the manner we allowed Chesterfield back into the game.

"Their front two strikers caused us problems. In fact, we looked uncomfortable from start to finish.

"Certainly when we went 1-0 up I thought we could have turned the screw a lot more.

"But we were caught square for their second goal. Whether it was hand ball or a suspicion of a hand ball I don't know.

"But the boy Lormor finished it very well. That gave us a mountain to climb."

Mullen was also disappointed with the decision not to award Burnley a second half penalty after defender Mark Williams hauled Adrian Heath down inside the penalty box.

"It was a penalty without a doubt," added Mullen.

"The boy hauled him to the ground with his arms all around him."

Meanwhile, Carlisle United have agreed to switch the Auto Windscreens Shield Northern Quarter Final tie at Brunton Park to Saturday, January 6.

The A team lost 2-1 at home to Blackpool on Saturday. Derek Adams was the Clarets scorer. The B team fared better with a 0-0 draw at Blackpool.

The youth team defend their Lancashire FA Youth Cup title against Tranmere Rovers in the second round of the competition at Turf Moor tomorrow night (7.15).
