FUND-raisers hope to raise cash for needy causes by losing as many pounds as possible.

Fifteen members of Accrington Rotary Club have started a three-month sponsored slim and fitness regime.

The average weight loss of the slimmers will be calculated next March and sponsors will donate money for every pound lost.

To get the event under way Kevin Holden, the president of the club, was the first on the scales for the official weigh-in. The organisers aim to collect £1,500 for charities and the cash will be handed out next month.

The course and diet is being organised by the health and fitness club at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel, Clayton-le-Moors.

Rotary club member and slimmer David Acklam said: "The idea is to lose weight and do something for a good cause at the same time.

"This way we have all got an incentive to lose as much weight as possible."
