PRESIDENTS, members and former members of East Lancashire branches of a professional women's club gathered on the site of their first meeting place to celebrate 60 years of the organisation.

Representatives of Blackburn, Burnley, Accrington, Clitheroe, Darwen, Great Harwood and Rishton Soroptimist International were among those who attended the party at Springfield Clinic, Whalley New Road, Blackburn.

The chief guest of the evening was Miss Anne Heyes, 94, an honorary member and former president of the Blackburn club and the North West region. The clubs are currently asking for nominations for the community award scheme and are looking for a woman who has made an exceptional contribution to community life.

Blackburn club president Catharine Warland said: "The theme of the award this year is poverty, in its broadest sense. We are looking for an unsung hero who has made a difference in Blackburn.

"We want to recognise her achievement and in so doing emphasise the vital role women play in our society."

Nominations must be entered before January 31 and forms are available from St John's Centre or write to S.I. Blackburn, c/o St John's Centre, Victoria Place, Blackburn BB16DN.
