A TEENAGE woman killed in a horrific car accident in the early hours of Saturday morning has been named as Tina Clarke, 19, of Clement Street, Darwen.

Tina was a front-seat passenger in a powerful, black Peugeot 205 GTi car which spun out of control on the A59 dual carriageway near to the junction with Vicarage Lane at Samlesbury.

The driver of the car, Gemma Louise Cowburn, also 19 and from Radfield Road, Darwen, remains critically ill in the intensive care unit of Royal Preston Hospital.

Three other male passengers from Darwen were injured during the 3am accident.

Keith Walsh, 19, of Rydal Avenue, received a fractured skull and facial and neck injuries and is comfortable in the Preston hospital.

His mother, Linda Walsh, said Keith was still very poorly.

She said: "The three lads had been on a night out in Blackburn. I don't know where the girls had been.

"They have all known each other for years."

Christopher John Bentley, 18, of Earnsdale Road, and Simon Lee Taylor, 18, of Mersey Avenue, were treated for minor injuries and shock before going home. Police are renewing an appeal for witnesses to the crash.

The dead woman was thrown from the car after it crashed into the central reservation and over-turned several times. The car was travelling towards Preston.

Ambulance crews found her body underneath the wrecked car.

A spokesman for Lancashire police said a distinctive fluorescent yellow Ford Escort Mark Three may have been in the area before the accident and they are anxious to talk to the driver. Witnesses can contact police on 01772 433561.
