CLITHEROE progressed into the third round of the ATS Trophy in a match marred by controversial refereeing decisions.

About 10 players were booked and Darwen's Ian Whittaker was sent off as the referee appeared to lose control.

Darwen had what appeared to be a perfectly legitimate penalty appeal turned down.

Clitheroe went ahead on 25 minutes when Dennis Hill floated the ball into the middle, Mark Heyes mis-kicked and Neil Ottley swept home.

The Blues escaped when a shot from Haworth was headed off the line by Steve Mankin to maintain Clitheroe's slender advantage at half-time.

With just two minutes to go Dennis Hill beat the offside trap to collect a through ball and hit a low shot past the advancing keeper.

"They had a man so far offside it defied belief," insisted Darwen manager Ian McGarry. "The referee was eccentric to say the least."
