LANCASHIRE households today faced the threat of their biggest ever rates rise.

The week ahead was to be crucial as county and town hall treasurers put the finishing touches to next year's budgets.

No definite figures were available but the indications were that the county rate rise alone could be about 30p in the £ - an increase of 20 per cent. The new rate was to be announced the following week.
