FURIOUS Burnley fans staged an angry 20-minute demonstration following the disastrous 2-0 defeat by Oxford United at Turf Moor last night.

Several hundred supporters stayed behind in Brunshaw Road after the final whistle to voice their protests outside he ground.

But it was business as usual at Turf Moor today as manager Jimmy Mullen signed Crystal Palace keeper Jimmy Glass on loan as cover for the injured Marlon Beresford.

The angry group of fans called for the dismissal of Mullen and chairman Frank Teasdale.

Worryingly the re-arranged clash attracted an attendance of just 6,815 fans-Turf Moor's lowest league gate for four years.

It was the first time a league attendance had dipped below the 7,000 mark since Mullen's first game in charge against Carlisle United in October 1991 following the departure of Frank Casper.

The fans' fury boiled over after the Clarets turned in a miserable Turf Moor show to hand Oxford their first league away win for nine months.

Hundreds of fans had left Turf Moor long before the final whistle and the Clarets were booed from the field at full-time.

Mullen described last night's dreadful 2-0 defeat at the hands of Oxford United as a 'severe disappointment.'

"I was wholly disappointed in that performance and it was simply not acceptable," said the Burnley boss.

"We have to face up to the situation. We simply did not perform against Oxford.

"It was a severe disappointment to me that we did not perform to the level required. We were well short of the mark.

"We never looked like winning the game and we never hurt Oxford enough, apart from the first quarter of an hour of the second half.

"We cannot hide behind corners. An immediate improvement is required in time for the weekend.

"The Brentford game can't come quickly enough. We need to get this whole thing out of our systems as quickly as possible."

Meanwhile, one supporter from Padiham, a season ticket holder for several seasons and who did not wish to be named, spoke for many of those involved in the post-match demonstration. He said: "Many fans have simply had enough and they are voicing their opinions in the only way they know how.

"Nobody at the club seems to want to even consider meeting the fans and we are clearly of no concern to them."

No members of the Burnley board were available for comment today.

Burnley sealed the signing of goalkeeper Jimmy Glass on a month's loan from First Division Crystal Palace today.

And the Selhurst Park keeper is expected to make his Clarets debut in tonight's Pontins League fixture against Grimsby Town at Turf Moor.

The signing brings to an end an extensive four-day search for goalkeeping cover following the news that Marlon Beresford would be ruled out with a double hernia.

"I've spoken to Steve Coppell about the lad over the past few days and he has agreed for him to come on loan," confirmed Mullen. "It now means I have experienced cover and competition for Wayne Russell for the first team spot. He will travel with us to Brentford at the weekend."

The six foot one goalkeeper has had limited first team opportunities at Palace, but enjoyed a successful loan stint at Portsmouth.

Mullen added: "He is a very competent young goalkeeper and we are glad to welcome him on board. The boy is very keen to join us too, which is vitally important."

Burnley Reserves entertain Grimsby Town at Turf Moor tonight (kick-off 7.15pm). Ted McMinn, Jamie Hoyland and Derek Adams are all expected to feature.
