DEPUTY leader of the council Lindsay Hoyle has been chosen to fight the next General Election for Labour in Chorley.

Coun Hoyle, chairman of Chorley's economic development and tourism sub-committee, was picked from a short-list of five candidates at a local selection meeting.

Now the businessman - he runs printing company Screen Arts in Adlington - could be set to join his father, Warrington MP Doug Hoyle, in Westminster.

That may be some time in 1997 if the Government, as expected, runs its full course.

Party chiefs believe Coun Hoyle, who lives in Anderton, has an excellent chance of becoming the next MP of key marginal Chorley.

Conservative Den Dover was returned at the last General Election with a majority of just over 4,000.

"I'm delighted to have been selected. We will need to pull together now in order to secure victory at the next General Election for Labour," said Mr Hoyle, who is also chairman of Chorley Chieftains RLFC.

Constituency party chairman Adrian Lowe said: "Lindsay has just got the formality of being endorsed by the national executive committee in London, but we don't envisage there will be any problems with that."

He added: "To be perfectly honest I think we had five very good candidates on the short-list.

"Lindsay is not only local but prominent in various fields. I think he's a very good candidate. Our campaign started as soon as he was selected. We realise there's a lot of work to do to oust Mr Dover but we are confident we have picked our next MP."
