YOUNGSTERS flocked to Nelson Dance Festival - the 49th annual event which has become very much a family affair.

Mums, grans and doting dads turned up to support more than 200 young dancers displaying their talents at Colne's Hippodrome Theatre.

But, with the festival enjoying a major revival and entries up by 25 per cent this year, the pressure on one family has put them in a spin.

Organisers Lawrence and Muriel Mutter are simply run off their feet.

After more than 30 years' service to the festival and helped now only by daughter, Janet, they are finding the going tough.

They have had to turn away schools of dancers hoping to take part in the premier event.

"We desperately need more helpers to take some of the load," says Muriel.

"It's our 50th festival anniversary next year and it is vital we find more help to ensure it really is a golden occasion."

With young competitors coming in from all over the North, London adjudicator Robert Harrold had his work cut out judging the high standard ballet and dance routines.

Next weekend sees the entry of the senior dancers, culminating in a Sunday finale when more than 60 trophy awards will be decided.
