A ROTARY Club stands to lose out on its biggest charity money-spinner after Burnley councillors decided to stick to their policies.

A management plan agreed for Towneley Park last year says that no charges can be made for car parking.

But Burnley Rotary Club has been charging £1 for parking at its annual classic car show and family fun day for about 10 years.

The club, which raises more than 50 per cent of its total charity cash each year from the event, asked the council for permission to increase the charge to £2.

Recreation and leisure councillors were told that, in 1993/94, £6,000 was distributed to charities with £5,100 to local charities, groups and schools and, in 1994/95, £4,335 was raised for local charities.

Parks manager Vincent Gradwell said the committee could use its discretion and allow the organisation to charge.

But Coun Betsy Stringer said: "I can't agree with this, because it will force people into supporting a charity."

Coun Eddie Fisk said he didn't believe any charge should be made for car parking at Towneley, but moved that the original £1 charge be levied.

The recommendation was amended by Coun Peter Kenyon who called for no charge to be made, but the vote was split nine-nine.

Coun Fisk's recommendation fell and Coun Roger Frost moved the £2 charge - but that was voted out.

The committee eventually recommended to leave the situation as it is and not allow the charity to charge.
