A SOCCER club has scored a winning goal for the environment by planting more than 600 trees in its grounds.

Grimebusters at Nelson FC - traditionally named "The Blues" - have already transformed the ground from an ugly eyesore into a green haven in just a few months.

And now they have planted the trees to create a wildlife screen next.

Once established, the screen will create a natural extension to the nearby Lomeshaye Woods conservation area.

Both projects have been shortlisted in this year's Grimewatch awards.

Club manager Ken Broom said: "This is an extension of what we have already done to clean up the club. "I didn't think we would get all the planting done in a day but thanks to help from Pendle Council who came and helped clear some ground with a tractor, and all the volunteers who turned up to help, it was a great success and we finished it all.

"Since we cleaned up the club it has gone from strength to strength.

"We are getting more supporters than ever before and we are also fighting for the top spot in the Bass North West Counties second division."
