WE HAVE been fortunate recently to have a most welcome spell of almost spring-like sunshine. For many retired citizens, who have largely been confined to the house through the ravages of winter, it has been an ideal opportunity to stretch their legs.

For some, a walk round the block will suffice; others may be able to walk a mile or two.

I have no doubt that the exercise will do them good both physically and spiritually. However, it is noticeable that hardly any take advantage in this way. Their quality of life, which is limited in the winter, is actually taken from them in the spring, summer and autumn by the thousands of private cars ruining our pleasure and environment.

Some will argue that their cars are essential. But I am referring to the Short Distance Johnnies (SDJs) who could so easily hop on a bus to work or, in many cases, walk.

Also their cars clutter up rural areas which would be ideal for short healthy walks.

I appeal to these SDJs: get out your walking shoes and give us all a treat.
