MEMBERS of the Orphanage Cup committee said a big thank-you to people who have helped them give a helping hand to needy youngsters in the Blackburn area.

At the annual general meeting in Longshaw WMC, long service awards were presented to committee members Walter Timmins and Jean Booth, who have both worked for the charity for 25 years.

Ken Dean also accepted the special Chairman's Award on behalf of Avesta Steel.

This year it donated an additional £200 to the Blackburn Children's Homes, apart from the usual money made from the Orphanage Cup football competition.

The Orphanage Cup was set up 46 years ago to raise cash for local orphans.

This year, a record 74 teams are taking part and the final will be held at Darwen FC.
