ADRIAN Heath is working 'night and day' to bring new faces to Turf Moor before next Thursday's Endsleigh League transfer deadline.

But Heath has again warned supporters that he will not be rushed into any panic measures.

Leicester City defender Jimmy Willis is due to sign at Turf Moor on Monday if the last minute snag which delayed the £125,000 deal yesterday can be ironed out this weekend.

And Portsmouth striker Carl Griffiths could also be on Heath's hit-list if Pompey boss Terry Fenwick agrees to let the ex-Manchester City forward out on loan to Turf Moor.

Heath, though, has made the bolstering of his Burnley defence a top priority as the Turf Moor player-boss prepares his long term strategy.

He explained: "Collectively we haven't defended too badly in the last four games. But we have lost two games due to individual mistakes and that is just not acceptable to me. We just cannot afford that at this level of football.

"If we are going to make progress then we just can't give teams easy goals. We have to try a lot harder to defend against teams when we are under pressure. At the moment I don't think we are working hard enough at doing that."

Heath - who claimed a 1-0 victory at Bristol City in his first game in charge a fortnight ago - was hoping the Clarets could improve on their Second Division position with a result at fourth-placed Oxford United today.

The Clarets slithered into 17th place after the 3-1 defeat at Crewe Alexandra and Heath added: "The whole league is alive at the moment and very tight from top to bottom. I'm confident that we will be alright and avoid any danger."
