TYLDESLEY born Roger Hampson, who went on to become principal of Bolton Art College, and a well respected caricaturist, has died after a long fight against leukaemia.

Mr. Hampson, a one-time pupil of Leigh Grammar School, where he gained a reputation for doing "caricatures of Gentlemen, for Gentlemen, by Gentlemen" as one friend described him, died at his home in Hereford, where he retired 10 years ago.

He had served in the Royal Navy before going on to attend Bolton Technical School where he graduated as an art teacher. He was vice-principal of Bolton Art College between 1961 and 1967 before being promoted to the principal's post in 1967, a job he held for eight years before moving to Loughborough, where he was principal until his retirement in 1986.

Mr. Hampson, aged 71, was a founder of the Brno-Bienale Design Congress in Czechoslovakia, where a special memorial congress was being held for him at the weekend. The work of Mr. Hampson has been exhibited in cities throughout Britain and overseas, and many of his pictures are now lodged with Leigh Town Hall archives. And one picture hangs proudly in the clubhouse of Tyldesley Rugby Club. His fame later saw him being appointed President of the Manchester Academy.

He leaves a widow, two children and four grandchildren.
