STEPPING out for charity - superfit fund-raisers tested their stamina in a four-hour Stepathon for the SuperScan Appeal.

The successful event was held in memory of Margaret Stewert, close friend of the organiser Barbara Murray, who died of cancer in March of this year.

Although funds are still coming in, the event has already pulled in £2,000 for the appeal, which aims to buy an MRI scanner to benefit thousands of East Lancashire people.

"I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of people, " said Barbara Murray.

"I had hoped to raise about £1,000 for SuperScan but we have managed double that - it is great.

"My friend Margaret had breast cancer two years ago, and was then diagnosed as having liver cancer.

"If she had had an MRI scan in time, she would have been diagnosed earlier and might still be alive today. She was going to come along to the Stepathon to cheer people on, but she died suddenly in March. We held the event in her honour."

The event was led by aerobics instructors Anita Murray and Sarah Oliver at Body Sculpture Gym, Pearson Street, Blackburn.

They were paid a visit by Paul Crone who presents Granada Tonight's Friday Frolics slot.
