MRS V Barker (Letters, April 23) was, rightly, very distressed by the woman's comments about her son while he was playing football. But she may like to bear in mind the following:

The woman doing the shouting obviously had such a low opinion of herself that she could only feel good by shouting such pointless and silly remarks.

Were the rest of the spectators impressed by this woman or did they feel sorry for her? Although these taunts were very hurtful, were her supporters in a majority? Was her opinion of any real value?

M ROGERS (Mr), Holden Fold, Darwen.
