STAFF at Sainsbury's could end up delivering more than the weekly groceries following the introduction of a new scheme to help mums-to-be! For the company is to offer a wide range of services for pregnant women and have even pledged to give a full year's supply of nappies to any mum whose waters break while they are in the store - or even on the car park. It is hoped the move will relieve the burden of shopping for expectant mothers.

Sharon Walker from Sainsbury's joked: "Women in the late stages will be dashing into the car park and driving over the speed humps to induce labour at this rate!"

The pledge also means special car parking spaces will be reserved for pregnant women and extra assistants will be on hand to carry heavy shopping bags out to the car.

"We'll even have assistants to dash off if they've forgotten to pick up some groceries once they're at the checkout.

"We've always done a lot to help mother and child but expectant mothers are equally important. We also do a special starter pack for mums-to-be in conjunction with the hospitals, added Sharon."

Customer service director Terry Wells said the pledge follows the launch of Sainsbury's breastfeeding policy last year.

He said: "As a father of four I am aware pregnancy can be tiring and stressful time. One of the key factors to having a baby is a healthy mother and that means taking special care of her during pregnancy and that's why we've come up with the pledge."
