THERE is a very 'Special' type of part-time job waiting for people in Leigh, Tyldesley and Atherton who feel they can help with law and order.

For a recruitment drive is underway by Greater Manchester Police to attract 250 new recruits to the Special Constabulary.

The Force already has 750 Specials and hopes to boost it upto 1,000 before the end of the year.

Recruiting Officer Mavis Wareham said: "This is extremely important, we need to highlight the sort of people we want and what's expected of them. The powers of a Special Constable, when on duty, are almost exactly the same as those of regular officers - crucial for modern day policing.

"We're looking for people who want to work with the community, but who have the ability not only to recognise the true nature of their role but the maturity to exercise powers in parallel with those of regular officers."

The police are looking for men and women between 19 and 50 years of age to offer their time on a voluntary basis, though expenses are paid, with time varying from four hours a month to four hours a week.

Mavis added: "It's one of the few jobs that allows the man or woman in the street to become involved in otherwise inaccessible activities. Specials get to work alongside regulars in carrying out everyday duties. We have people from all social backgrounds and cultures working as Specials, but regardless of status, they gain enormous satisfaction from what they do."
