SPEEDING drivers wreaking havoc on a Preston Council estate have enraged residents who are demanding action.

Hundreds of signatures were collected in the Larches Estate and handed over to Mayor Ron Marshall at Preston Town Hall last week.

This push for improved road safety measures comes after the introduction of speed cameras on Blackpool Road.

They didn't put an end to residents' troubles - the motor menaces simply changed routes.

The worst hit areas now include Whinfield Lane, Greaves Town Lane and Larches Avenue.

Whinfield Lane, close to Ashton Park and a rest home, has become a particular danger spot for children and pensioners.

Leading the campaign is Gerry Walmsley, Larches ward councillor. He said: "It has become exceedingly dangerous. People entering the town from Blackpool and the Riversway area think it is a short cut.

"It is only a matter of time before an accident happens and I would urge people to slow down. Speed kills.

"Whinfield Lane is particularly bad as it starts off straight and becomes narrow and winding, and there are no pavements."

Larches Ward councillor Danny Gallagher said consultants had been investigating the issue since 1989. It is a shame decisions have been made on the issue of cost. Money should not come into it - it is about saving lives.

"In the past we have asked for 30 mph signs to be erected but these have been refused."

He hoped the highways committee would agree to sleeping policemen being introduced in the danger areas.
