A CAMPAIGN to save a piece of Nelson's history depends on the luck of the Irish.

The Irish Democratic League Club, in Walton Street, could close unless it gets a new lease of life.

It has always been known as a friendly spot, where the blarney and the crack cut through race and cultures.

Supporters fear the laughter might come to a stop on Sunday (July 7), if a special general meeting decides to call it a day.

Bradley Ward Pendle Councillor Tony Leather says the club is a vital part of the area and deserves to stay.

He wants anyone who is interested to turn up at the 11.30am meeting.

Said Mr Leather: "I am both infuriated and saddened by the discovery that an important piece of Nelson's history, and of Pendle's heritage, could soon be lost to us.

"The Irish League Club is one of the oldest clubs in Nelson and in days gone by its hospitality was enjoyed by the founders of the Welfare State and even future Prime Ministers.

"Like many people in my ward, I have always enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of the Irish League, where all are welcome.

"I do not wish to see such a historically-rich place close its doors forever. How many others out there truly feel the same way?

"A large attendance by all who wish to save the Irish League is vital, be they members or not, and I strongly urge all who want to help to be there.

"Let us all attend, and be ready to prove that when something is worth saving we are willing to do our best to help."
