TURF Moor chief Adrian Heath has renewed his search for fresh talent and warned his squad: "Start looking over your shoulders."

The Burnley player-manager has his sights on a striker - and he hopes to have at least one new face in his line-up for Saturday's Division Two pipe-opener at Luton Town.

And today he warned his players to expect a fierce fight for their shirts as he masterminds a Burnley promotion challenge.

"Too many times last season the Burnley team team picked itself. That's not healthy," explained Heath.

"When players don't have to look over their shoulders and think that their performances don't need to be of a standard that keeps their place for next week then that is clearly not acceptable.

"That was the case last season and that is something we've addressed. I want every position in the team to be under threat from another player. I've stressed to all the players that the best people in the squad will play. The players know the score." Heath added: "Every successful club that I've ever played for has had strength in depth. They've had the people who could come in and take your position if you are not doing it out on the pitch.

"But it's not a case of people leaving the club just because I've bought a few extra faces in. I've brought Vince Overson here and I'm reasonably satisfied that we're quite strong at the back.

"But people should not automatically presume that when you buy somebody that he's automatically going to play. That is not the case.

"If I think that somebody else is going to play better and win us a football match then I'll do it."

Paul Weller grabbed a hat-trick as a Burnley representative side ran out comfortable 6-2 winners against Lancaster City at Giant Axe last night. Liam Robinson returned from injury to score twice with Chris Brass scoring the other Clarets goal.

Burnley have decided not to pursue their interest in Yugoslav Under-21 Constantin Baric. The defender was due to play against Clitheroe last week but had to return home to Belgrade due to a family illness.

Heath ran the rule over the friendly between Stoke City and Spanish First Division side Osasuna at the Victoria Ground last night.
