CITY were taught a lesson in finishing against a keen Burnley side at Giant Axe on Tuesday night.

Lancaster boss Alan Tinsley fielded several of his close season signings in a new-look, five-man defensive formation which included Paul Tomlinson, Robbie Armstrong, Carl Macauley and Steve McNeilis.

But for all their possession and forward momentum, the Blues 'keeper Mark Thornley found himself beaten five times in the first half with Burnley first teamers Liam Robinson and Paul Weller (who scored a hat-trick) doing most of the damage.

City's two goals both came in the second half. The first came via the penalty spot when local referee Mick Raws blew for a foul on Stuart Diggle and John Coleman converted.

The second came from a more unusual source, the right boot of City defender Barrie Stimpson who lashed the ball home from all of 30 yards.

City now face Ashton United in a friendly at Giant Axe on Saturday, August 17, before they start their Unibond Premier League campaign at home to Hyde United on Saturday August 24.

Tickets for the forthcoming Lancaster City Sportsmen's Dinner starring Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson go on sale next week.

The United supremo will be at the event in Lancaster Town Hall on Thursday September 12 and tickets cost £25. There is bound to be a massive demand so call Mick Hoyle at the club on (01524) 382238 to reserve your place.

The Lancaster City matchday programme has again been voted Unibond League Programme of the Year.
