A JEWELLER discovered some of East Lancashire's soccer history after being given some scrap gold to melt down.

Peter Jackson discovered seven medals - one of them 83 years' old - belonging to amateur sides in the area.

And now he wants to give them back to the football associations...if they still exist.

Peter, who has jewellery shops in Blackburn and Preston, said: "The medals arrived in a package of scrap gold that was due to be melted and recycled.

"They're nine carat gold and are worth about £100 each. I'd really like to give them back to the associations if they're still around."

The medals are inscribed with the words, Accrington and District Schools, 1913; B and D Amateur Football League, 1926-27; Haslingden Amateur Football League, 1932-33, winners Division A; R and D JAL Shield Cup winners, 1930-31; R and D JAL league winners, 1930-31, R and D JAAFL League Winners, 1928-29. The seventh medal is marked St Philips MC, 1914-1915.
