PAUL Barnes was only the THIRD Burnley player to score five goals in a Football League game since the Second World War.

Club historian Ray Simpson revealed the Clarets striker was only a goal short of equalling the all-time individual Burnley scoring record.

The last time ANY player scored five in a Football League fixture was Steve Butler. He netted five for Cambridge in a 5-0 win at Exeter in April 1994.

Andy Cole managed it for Manchester United in a 9-0 victory over Ipswich in 1995, but that was in the Premiership.

"Louis Page still holds the Burnley record when he scored a double hattrick against Birmingham at St Andrews in 1926," Simpson explained.

"But when Paul Barnes got his fifth with ten minutes to go I did wonder whether the record might be equalled." For the record, here are the Burnley players who have scored five or more before Barnes joined their select club on Saturday.

Andy Lochhead, January 1966, 5 versus Bournemouth in a 7-0 FA Cup, third round replay at Turf Moor.

Andy Lochhead, April 1965, 5 versus Chelsea in a 6-2 win at Turf Moor.

Jimmy Robson, November 1959, 5 in an 8-0 win over Nottingham Forest at Turf Moor, the season Burnley clinched the old Division One title.

Joe Anderson, February 1921, 5 versus Aston Villa in a 7-1 win over Aston Villa at Turf Moor.

Jimmy Ross, March 1898, 5 versus Loughborough in a 9-3 win at Turf Moor.

Louis Page, April 1926, six in a 7-1 win at Birmingham City. The Burnley club record.
