BLACKPOOL'S young homeless are to be given a launchpad out of the poverty trap.

A charity is to establish a residential training centre where they can train in a variety of different subjects as they bid to get better jobs.

Foyer Plus Residential Training Centre is up and running in several towns and cities across the country.

Now Blackpool youngsters aged 16-25 are set to benefit from the unique programme.

The project, which is being funded by Manchester Methodist Housing Association, will provide affordable accommodation to young people while they are training.

Chapel Street Methodist Church will be converted into flatlets and office accommodation.

Training is provided in all kinds of different careers.

In one of the developments in other towns, training was given to a girl who wanted be a singer on a cruise ship; she consequently secured a job.

Support, guidance, counselling and social facilities are also provided and supervision by qualified staff will be provided around the clock.

Local hoteliers are angry at the project as they feel the centre would just be another DSS hostel.

But Councillor George Bancroft explained: "This scheme cannot be called a hostel by any definition.

"It provides training in a comfortable and affordable environment and is a marvellous project which will be excellent for the town."

The project would also benefit the local community as it will form a community centre.

Facilities available for public use in other towns include libraries and mother and toddler groups.
