AMBITIOUS plans to jet Blackpool town centre into the next century are being laid before residents so they can give their views.

A questionnaire inviting opinions on the area is being circulated with a consultation leaflet on the council's hopes for the future.

The leaflet details how Blackpool Borough Council plans to make the town centre more attractive to both residents and visitors.

Proposals include extending pedestrian areas over the next six years and creating civic spaces in Talbot Square and St John's Square.

These would be areas where shoppers could relax and the environment would be improved by sculptures and artwork.

Another suggestion is growing trees or flowers next to buildings to soften the overall effect.

Council leader Ivan Taylor said: "Maintaining a balance between the needs of residents and visitors is a problem in many major towns, but are compounded in Blackpool because of its position as the UK's top holiday resort.

"This mix results in high volumes of pedestrians and vehicles.

"Town centre traffic is particularly heavy and in many areas pedestrians have to negotiate busy roads just to get from one shop to another.

"A lack of open space denies shoppers and visitors the opportunity to stop, relax and enjoy the unique atmosphere that is Blackpool."

The leaflet is available from Blackpool Town Hall and is expected to be distributed in shops and libraries.
