BLACKBURN Rovers today told Premiership rivals Newcastle United 'Shay Given is not for sale.'

Speculation in the North East said Magpies' boss Kevin Keegan was on the verge of making a big money move for the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper.

But Rovers caretaker boss Tony Parkes said: "Shay Given is going nowhere.

"He will be at Ewood Park until the end of the season - at least.

"I read that Newcastle were interested in Tim (Flowers) a few months ago. Now it seems it's Shay.

"It's no surprise that speculation surrounds both goalkeepers.

"It's a problem we've got because Shay is a top-class goalkeeper and he is not prepared to sit on the fence for too long. We have quality goalkeepers here and I suppose it's quite a nice situation for me."

Parkes added: "The lad is determined to get first team football. But we are negotiating with him to stay at Blackburn. At the end of the day it will be his decision."

Parkes also denied that Paul Warhurst was ready to move to First Division Bolton Wanderers.

"There will certainly be no transfer for Paul Warhurst or anybody else at present."

A loan spell for Warhurst, however, remains a distinct possibility with Bolton striker Nathan Blake facing suspension and Warhurst needing match practice.

Parkes has added Warhurst to his squad for tomorrow's Premiership trip to Everton.

But Garry Flitcroft will not feature but may be fit for Saturday's FA Cup third round tie against Port Vale.

Rovers' Welsh Under-18 goalkeeper Anthony Williams is in the travelling party to Goodison. Tim Flowers faces a late fitness test.

Meanwhile, Terry Phelan is expected to make his Everton debut against Rovers tomorrow after moving to Merseyside from Chelsea in an £850,000 deal.

The 29-year-old Republic of Ireland defender was expected at the Bellefield training complex today after agreeing a three-and-a-half year contract. Everton manager Joe Royle moved in quickly for the experienced Phelan as Andy Hinchcliffe is ruled out for the season because of a knee injury.

And Royle is delighted to have secured the services of the former Manchester City and Wimbledon left back.

"He is an ideal replacement for Andy," he said.
