SHAY Given has put in a transfer request.

But the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper is still unlikely to leave Blackburn Rovers before the end of the season when his contract expires.

Ewood chairman Robert Coar confirmed today that he had received an official request from the 20-year-old who has been a long-time target for Sunderland.

But he said: "It doesn't change anything. Shay is expected to see out his contract."

The keeper has no argument with Rovers, apart from the fact that he needs first team football, not least to win back his international place.

Caretaker-boss Tony Parkes has already admitted that he expects the club to lose Given in summer.

He said: "There have been a lot of negotiations with him about a new contract and they have been ongoing.

"But we understand his position. It looks as though we will lose him but he remains our player until the end of the season."

Given impressed during a loan spell at Sunderland and Roker boss Peter Reid tried to sign him.
