RENTOKIL Initial, owners of the Shorrock security operation in Blackburn, reported pre-tax profits rose 48.2 per cent to £318 million in 1996. The £2.3 billion acquisition of BET in March more than doubled group turnover to £2.304 billion, a 167 per cent hike on 1995's total of £860.1 million. Despite a less inspiring second half, their performance in 1996 means chief executive Sir Clive Thompson hits his target of achieving a 20 per cent rise in earnings for the 14th successive year. Results would have been better had the integration of BET not cost a further £16.4 in exceptional charges and the strong pound not impacted on earnings.
