THE boss of East Lancashire Health Authority is resigning due to ill-health, it was revealed today.

Richard Crail has been chief executive since April 1994.

Health authority chairman Bill Ashworth said: "It is with great regret that I have to announce that Richard Crail has formally resigned from the post of chief executive of East Lancashire Health Authority with effect from September 12.

"He has taken this decision after being unwell for some time.

"I am very grateful to Richard for the work and effort in Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale."

Mr Ashworth said the post would be advertised nationally and immediately.

Finance director David Peat will continue as acting chief executive.

Mr Crail was previously district general manager and chief executive of Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Health Authority.

He has worked in the NHS since 1957 and had posts in the South West, London and East Anglia before moving to East Lancashire.
