CHILDREN got a chance to explore a leafy island complete with palm trees and a willow boat as part of national school grounds day.

Leaf island has been developed at Burnley's Todmorden Road Primary School as part of a scheme to brighten up the school yards and create environmentally interesting areas in which the children can learn.

Head teacher Phillip Morton said: "We have converted an old toilet area and a previous wildlife garden to create leaf island.

"There is a island in the middle with willow sculptures in the shape of waves, a boat and seating area.

"Entrance to the island is through a willow sculpture archway and there are palm trees on the island - and as I have just been to Majorca I can say they look just like the real thing!"

The sculpture was completed by Jeff Allen with the help of children from years three and four.

A parent and other volunteers helped make the island.

Murals are still to be completed and one will depict a visit to North West Water - one of the main sponsors of the project.

The school also received sponsorship from Burnley Wildlife Partnership and help from Groundwork.

Last year the school opened oceanic island complete with Noah's Ark and wooden animals in another yard.
