BURY'S promotion winning soccer squad takes to the streets for a colourful civic reception next week.

Just like last year, when the Shakers climbed into the Second Division, the town is planning a big party to mark Bury FC's confirmation as a First Division side next season.

An open top bus will take the squad and club officials from Gigg Lane on Wednesday, May 7 for a VIP reception at Bury Town Hall.

Setting off at 5.45pm, the blue and white bedecked bus will make its way via Market Street and Angouleme Way to the Town Hall to be met by the Borough's Mayor, Councillor Trevor Holt, together with other civic dignitaries.

Crowds are being encouraged to gather in Knowsley Street and the players, together with manager, Stan Ternent, will be making an appearance from the balcony of No. 1 Committee Room at the side of the civic building at around 6.15pm. Later, there will be buffet refreshments for the squad with the whole proceedings due to end at around 8pm.

Bury Metro's Acting Chief Executive, Dennis Taylor, himself a keen Bury FC regular and closely involved with local youth football in the Borough, said:

"It is a dream come true for the Shakers and just like last year, the Council wants to join in the celebrations. This season has been an amazing one. Everyone from the chairman to Bury FC supporters and backers, backroom staff, the manager and, of course, the players deserve to revel in promotion.

"Most people expected the club to simply consolidate its position in the Second Division but no, they had their sights set on far greater achievements and no-one can take away this season's success from them."

Bury Metro's Council Leader, Councillor John Byrne, another Gigg Lane supporter, added:

"For those fans who have followed the club in recent years, the last two seasons have been their reward. This year we have done it in style and, what style. Local pride is running at a new all time high. From everyone at Bury Metro we just want to say well done Bury FC. A First Division club for a First Division town."

Although we have not had official confirmation we understand that supporters wishing to park their cars at the Interchange and Manchester Road car parks while they greet the team can do so for free . . . as long as they arrive after 5pm.
