THE parents of tragic teenager Paul Butler have asked the Star to convey their gratitude to everyone who sent cards and flowers following news of his death from muscular dystrophy.

Eighteen-year-old Paul from Haydock was featured in the Star early last year when his parents, Eileen and Ray, appealed for help in raising enough money to buy him a motorised wheelchair as he wasn't able to push himself around on his own.

And the Butlers were astounded at the amazing generosity of Star readers who pulled out all the stops, resulting in Paul being given his dream wheelchair last autumn.

Sadly, though Paul's condition deteriorated this year and a little while ago he passed away at home surrounded by his devoted family.

Mum, Eileen told the Star: "The support has been absolutely overwhelming. At the last count we had 350 cards. We would thank everyone, not only family and friends, but also our local church, the Wesleyan Methodist in Clipsley Lane, and well-wishers who met Paul out and about in St Helens in his chair and who have offered love and support.

"Paul touched most people's hearts because he was so friendly and outgoing with everyone and never complained about his illness and he also lived his life to the full. He was really into football and loved watching Manchester United and he also enjoyed playing snooker every week in Blackbrook Working Men's Club with his dad.

"Our daughter Gemma was brilliant. She is only 12 but she really helped to look after her brother - she has got the right name because she has been a little gem over the last few years."

PAUL'S funeral was held on Monday, April 14 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church.
