THREE attackers knifed, clubbed and kicked a 28-year-old man in a midnight assault in an underpass near to Gannow roundabout, Burnley.

Police believe the incident to be an attempted robbery although the offenders ran off empty-handed.

The victim, who has not been named, was being interviewed by detectives today after being released from Burnley General Hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries including a cut to his chest.

He was walking between Field Street and Gannow Lane when he was approached by a man asking the time. As he tried to conceal his watch, two other men attacked him from behind. A blow from a heavy object knocked him to the ground where he was repeatedly kicked as he tried to defend himself.

It was only later that he realised a knife had been used causing a slight wound to the chest and cuts to his clothing.

The three men left empty-handed.

One of the attackers is described as white, in his mid-twenties, 5ft 7ins tall and of average build.

He has what is described as messy ginger hair and a 'poxy' face. He spoke with a possibly Scottish accent.

The other two are described as being aged between 19 and 21. One of them was wearing Nike trainers.

Anyone with information which could help police inquiries is asked to contact Burnley CID on 01282-435001.
